Lewis and Clark visited an area north of the Platte River in 1804, but it wasn’t until 1854 that a trading post named The Barracks was constructed as a permanent site for docking ferry boats transporting settlers across the Missouri River from Mills County, IA. As a community developed, the name was changed to Plattsmouth to reflect the convergence of the Platte River with the Missouri River. Fertile farmland and easy access to both rivers played important roles in the city’s development and continue to do so today.

The city government and its Chamber of Commerce are also actively engaged in economic development for the area and have been the recipients of several large grants used for a new senior facility, the Plattsmouth Community Center, and an industrial park.

All buildings are relatively new and have excellent technological facilities for both staff and students. Plattsmouth also has a 40,000-volume library, fifteen churches, and six public parks.
